Attention Ms. Pinilla’s Eighth Graders!

Mrs. Pinilla’s 8th Grade Students:

Greetings!

As you may know, April is National Poetry Month.  In order to celebrate the literary art form, we are going to participate in a Poem in Your Pocket activity, April 28th and April 29th.  I know!  – I’m excited too!

What you need to do:

  1. Visit Poets.org and search for poem in your pocket. There you will find a YouTube video clip giving you an overview of how different communities have used this idea to share poetry.  (background information for you).
  1. Search websites such as Poem Hunter, or Poets.org, and find a poem that resonates with you.  Note:  you are not limited to those websites only.  Consult poetry books as well.
  1. Make 2 copies of the poem. One will be taped to your reader’s notebook, along with a reflective paragraph of why you chose the poem. Food for thought – what line of poem speaks to you and why?  Why is this poem significant to you?  What do you think the poet is saying?  The other copy of the poem will be brought into class – you got it – in your pocket!
  1. Be prepared to share and discuss the poem you selected on April 28th / April 29th!
